For a full, satisfying day on foot: start at sea level and climb the cobbled paths through Pinakates, Vizitsa and Milies, the heart of western Pelion.

The walk

From the beach at Kala Nera the kalderimi zig-zags up to Pinakates, crosses to Vizitsa, then descends to Milies, passing an arched stone bridge over the railway, village-square fountains, the Agios Ioannis Prodromos monastery and broad views over the Pagasetic Gulf.

Good to know

  • Moderate but long, about 708 m of climbing over 14 km; give it most of a day.
  • Well waymarked (red paint, signs); water available in the villages en route.
  • Return easily by the historic train or the bus from Milies, no need to walk back.
  • Comfortable April to October; carry sun cover for the open lower sections.
